Church-Based TESOL Ministry is a research initiative dedicated to exploring how local churches can develop and run English as a Second Language programmes as an effective expression of Christian mission. It studies how churches may meaningfully serve immigrants, refugees, and international students through professionally delivered TESOL programmes that reflect biblical values, educational quality, and genuine care for people.
Although many churches already offer English classes, relatively little research has been conducted on how these initiatives can be developed and implemented effectively. This project seeks to “bridge” that gap by bringing together insights from theology, missiology, applied linguistics (TESOL), and pastoral ministry. Rather than seeing English classes simply as outreach activities, it aims to present church-based TESOL ministry as a unique context where language learning, personal growth, building relationships, and spiritual care can take place.
This research project hopes to provide a coherent, evidence-based, and theologically informed framework for churches that are considering starting English language ministries. It aims explain the theological foundations of TESOL ministry, explore its historical development and current practice, examine practical models from different contexts, and offer guidance for planning, teaching, pastoral care, leadership, and long-term ministry development. Together with its original research, it offers case studies, interviews, practical resources, and ministry tools designed to support churches.
The author of the project believes that church-based TESOL ministry offers churches a unique opportunity to serve their communities, support personal development, and communicate the Christian faith through genuine and authentic care for people.
