Psalm 59
(LXX 58)

AlexandrinusVaticanus

To the chief Musician, Altaschith, Michtam of David; when Saul sent, and they watched the house to kill him.

1 Deliver me from my enemies, Oh my God; defend me from those who rise up against me.

1 Deliver me from my enemies, Oh God; and ransom me from those who rise up against me. 1 Deliver me from my enemies, Oh God; and ransom me from those who rise up against me.

2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men.

2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men. 2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men.

3 For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul; the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, Oh LORD.

3 For, behold, they have hunted after my soul; violent men have set upon me; neither is it my iniquity, nor my sin, Oh Lord. 3 For, behold, they have hunted after my soul; violent men have set upon me; neither is it my iniquity, nor my sin, Oh Lord.

4 They run and prepare themselves without my fault; awake to help me, and behold.

4 Without iniquity I ran and directed my course aright; awake to help me, and behold. 4 Without iniquity I ran and directed my course aright; awake to help me, and behold.

5 You therefore, Oh LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen; don’t be merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah.

6 They return at evening; they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.

6 They shall return at evening, and hunger like a dog, and go round about the city. 6 They shall return at evening, and hunger like a dog, and go round about the city.

7 Behold, they belch out with their mouth; swords are in their lips; for who, say they, does hear?

7 Ἰδοὺ ἀποφθέγξονται ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν, καὶ ῥομφαία ἐν τοῖς χείλεσιν αὐτῶν· ὅτι τίς ἤκουσεν; 7 ἰδοὺ ἀποφθέγξονται ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν, καὶ ῥομφαία ἐν τοῖς χείλεσιν αὐτῶν, ὅτι τίς ἤκουσε;
7 Behold, they shall utter a voice with their mouth, and a sword is in their lips; for who, say they, has heard? 7 Behold, they shall utter a voice with their mouth, and a sword is in their lips; for who, say they, has heard?

8 But you, Oh LORD, shall laugh at them; you shall have all the heathen in derision.

8 But you, Lord, will laugh them to scorn; you will utterly set at nought all the heathen. 8 But you, Lord, will laugh them to scorn; you will utterly set at nought all the heathen.

9 Because of his strength will I wait upon you; for God is my defence.

9 will keep my strength, looking to you; for you, Oh God, are my helper. 9 will keep my strength, looking to you; for you, Oh God, are my helper.

10 The God of my mercy shall go before me; God shall let me see my desire upon my enemies.

10 As for my God, his mercy shall go before me; my God will show me vengeance on my enemies. 10 As for my God, his mercy shall go before me; my God will show me vengeance on my enemies.

11 Don’t slay them, lest my people forget; scatter them by your power; and bring them down, Oh Lord our shield.

12 For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride; and for cursing and lying which they speak.

13 Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be; and let them know that God rules in Jacob unto the ends of the earth. Selah.

13 And for their cursing and falsehood shall utter destruction be denounced; they shall fall by the wrath of utter destruction, and shall not be; so shall they know that the God of Jacob is Lord of the ends of the earth. Pause. 13 And for their cursing and falsehood shall utter destruction be denounced; they shall fall by the wrath of utter destruction, and shall not be; so shall they know that the God of Jacob is Lord of the ends of the earth. Pause.

14 And at evening let them return ; and let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.

14 They shall return at evening, and be hungry as a dog, and go round about the city. 14 They shall return at evening, and be hungry as a dog, and go round about the city.

15 Let them wander up and down for food, and grudge if they be not satisfied.

15 They shall be scattered here and to that place for meat; and if they are not satisfied, they shall even murmur. 15 They shall be scattered here and to that place for meat; and if they are not satisfied, they shall even murmur.

16 But I will sing of your power; yes, I will sing aloud of your mercy in the morning; for you have been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.

16 But I will sing to your strength, and in the morning will I exult in your mercy; for you have been my supporter, and my refuge in the day of my affliction. 16 But I will sing to your strength, and in the morning will I exult in your mercy; for you have been my supporter, and my refuge in the day of my affliction.

17 Unto you, Oh my strength, will I sing; for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy.

17 You are my helper; to you, my God, will I sing; you are my supporter, Oh my God, and my mercy. 17 You are my helper; to you, my God, will I sing; you are my supporter, Oh my God, and my mercy.
