The Words of Agur

1 The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spoke unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,

דִּבְרֵ֤י ׀ אָג֥וּר בִּן־יָקֶ֗ה הַמַּ֫שָּׂ֥א נְאֻ֣ם הַ֭גֶּבֶר לְאִֽיתִיאֵ֑ל לְאִ֖יתִיאֵ֣ל וְאֻכָֽל׃

1 Τοὺς ἐμοὺς λόγους, υἱέ, φοβήθητι καὶ δεξάμενος αὐτοὺς μετανόει· τάδε λέγει ὁ ἀνὴρ τοῖς πιστεύουσιν θεῷ, καὶ παύομαι· 1 τάδε λέγει ὁ ἀνὴρ τοῖς πιστεύουσι Θεῷ, καὶ παύομαι·

2 Surely I am more brutish than any man, and haven’t the understanding of a man.

כִּ֤י בַ֣עַר אָנֹכִ֣י מֵאִ֑ישׁ וְלֹֽא־בִינַ֖ת אָדָ֣ם לִֽי׃

2 Ἀφρονέστατος γάρ εἰμι πάντων ἀνθρώπων, καὶ φρόνησις ἀνθρώπων οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἐμοί· 2 ἀφρονέστατος γάρ εἰμι ἁπάντων ἀνθρώπων, καὶ φρόνησις ἀνθρώπων οὐκ ἐστιν ἐν ἐμοί·

3 I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy.

וְלֹֽא־לָמַ֥דְתִּי חָכְמָ֑ה וְדַ֖עַת קְדֹשִׁ֣ים אֵדָֽע׃

4 Who has ascended up into heaven, or descended? who has gathered the wind in his fists? who has bound the waters in a garment? who has established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if you can tell?

מִ֤י עָלָֽה־שָׁמַ֨יִם ׀ וַיֵּרַ֡ד מִ֤י אָֽסַף־ר֨וּחַ ׀ בְּחָפְנָ֡יו מִ֤י צָֽרַר־מַ֨יִם ׀ בַּשִּׂמְלָ֗ה מִ֭י הֵקִ֣ים כָּל־אַפְסֵי־אָ֑רֶץ מַה־שְּׁמֹ֥ו וּמַֽה־שֶּׁם־בְּ֝נֹ֗ו כִּ֣י תֵדָֽע׃

4 τίς ἀνέβη εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ κατέβη;
τίς συνήγαγεν ἀνέμους ἐν κόλπῳ τίς συνέστρεψεν ὕδωρ ἐν ἱματίῳ;
τίς ἐκράτησεν πάντων τῶν ἄκρων τῆς γῆς;
τί ὄνομα αὐτῷ, ἢ τί ὄνομα τοῖς τέκνοις αὐτοῦ, ἵνα γνῷς; 		4 τίς ἀνέβη εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ κατέβη;
τίς συνήγαγεν ἀνέμους ἐν κόλπῳ;
τίς συνέστρεψεν ὕδωρ ἐν ἱματίῳ;
τίς ἐκράτησε πάντων τῶν ἄκρων τῆς γῆς;
τί ὄνομα αὐτῷ, ἢ τί ὄνομα τοῖς τέκνοις αὐτοῦ;

5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto those who put their trust in him.

כָּל־אִמְרַ֣ת אֱלֹ֣והַּ צְרוּפָ֑ה מָגֵ֥ן ה֝֗וּא לַֽחֹסִ֥ים בֹּֽו׃

6 Don’t add to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be found a liar.

אַל־תֹּ֥וסְףְּ עַל־דְּבָרָ֑יו פֶּן־יֹוכִ֖יחַ בְּךָ֣ וְנִכְזָֽבְתָּ׃

7 Two things have I required of you; don’t deny them to me before I die:

שְׁ֭תַּיִם שָׁאַ֣לְתִּי מֵאִתָּ֑ךְ אַל־תִּמְנַ֥ע מִ֝מֶּ֗נִּי בְּטֶ֣רֶם אָמֽוּת׃

8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:

שָׁ֤וְא ׀ וּֽדְבַר־כָּזָ֡ב הַרְחֵ֬ק מִמֶּ֗נִּי רֵ֣אשׁ וָ֭עֹשֶׁר אַל־תִּֽתֶּן־לִ֑י הַ֝טְרִיפֵ֗נִי לֶ֣חֶם חֻקִּֽי׃

פֶּ֥ן אֶשְׂבַּ֨ע ׀ וְכִחַשְׁתִּי֮ וְאָמַ֗רְתִּי מִ֥י יְה֫וָ֥ה וּפֶֽן־אִוָּרֵ֥שׁ וְגָנַ֑בְתִּי וְ֝תָפַ֗שְׂתִּי שֵׁ֣ם אֱלֹהָֽי׃

9 ἵνα μὴ πλησθεὶς ψευδὴς γένωμαι καὶ εἴπω, τίς με ὁρᾷ;

12 There is a generation that is pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filth.

דֹּ֭ור טָהֹ֣ור בְּעֵינָ֑יו וּ֝מִצֹּאָתֹ֗ו לֹ֣א רֻחָֽץ׃

13 There is a generation, Oh how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.

דֹּ֭ור מָה־רָמ֣וּ עֵינָ֑יו וְ֝עַפְעַפָּ֗יו יִנָּשֵֽׂאוּ׃

14 There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.

דֹּ֤ור ׀ חֲרָבֹ֣ות שִׁנָּיו֮ וּֽמַאֲכָלֹ֪ות מְֽתַלְּעֹ֫תָ֥יו לֶאֱכֹ֣ל עֲנִיִּ֣ים מֵאֶ֑רֶץ וְ֝אֶבְיֹונִ֗ים מֵאָדָֽם׃

14 ἔκγονον κακὸν μαχαίρας τοὺς ὀδόντας ἔχει καὶ τὰς μύλας τομίδας, ὥστε ἀναλίσκειν καὶ κατεσθίειν τοὺς ταπεινοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς καὶ τοὺς πένητας αὐτῶν ἐξ ἀνθρώπων. 14 ἔκγονον κακὸν μαχαίρας τοὺς ὀδόντας ἔχει καὶ τὰς μύλας τομίδας, ὥστε ἀναλίσκειν καὶ κατεσθίειν τοὺς ταπεινοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς καὶ τοὺς πένητας αὐτῶν ἐξ ἀνθρώπων.

15 The horseleach has two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yes, four things don’t say, It is enough:

18 There are three things which are too wonderful for me, yes, four which I don’t know:

21 For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear:

תַּ֣חַת שָׁ֭לֹושׁ רָ֣גְזָה אֶ֑רֶץ וְתַ֥חַת אַ֝רְבַּ֗ע לֹא־תוּכַ֥ל שְׂאֵֽת׃

23 καὶ οἰκέτις ἐὰν ἐκβάλῃ τὴν ἑαυτῆς κυρίαν, καὶ μισητὴ γυνὴ ἐὰν τύχῃ ἀνδρὸς ἀγαθοῦ. 23 καὶ οἰκέτις ἐὰν ἐκβάλῃ τὴν ἑαυτῆς κυρίαν καὶ μισητὴ γυνὴ ἐὰν τύχῃ ἀνδρὸς ἀγαθοῦ.

24 There are four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:

25 The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their food in the summer;

שְׁ֭פַנִּים עַ֣ם לֹא־עָצ֑וּם וַיָּשִׂ֖ימוּ בַסֶּ֣לַע בֵּיתָֽם׃
